Immediate care
Remove the bandage: Take off the bandage as instructed by your artist, usually within a few hours to a day, and do not re-bandage.
Wash your hands: Always wash your hands thoroughly before touching your tattoo.
Wash gently: Use lukewarm water and a mild antibacterial soap. Do not use a washcloth or loofah; use only your hands.
Pat dry: Gently pat the area dry with a clean paper towel and let it air dry completely before applying ointment.
First few days
Apply a thin layer of ointment: Use a very thin layer of an artist-approved ointment or a fragrance-free lotion, like Aquaphor or Cetaphil. Do not use petroleum jelly, Neosporin, or similar products.
Wash and moisturize 1-2 times a day: Continue this routine unless the tattoo gets dirty. Avoid over-moisturizing, as a thick layer can prevent the skin from breathing correctly.
After the first few days
Switch to lotion: After a few days, you can switch from ointment to a fragrance-free, unscented lotion to keep the skin hydrated.
Do not pick or scratch: As the tattoo peels, resist the urge to scratch or pick at the scabs to prevent ink loss or infection.
Wear loose clothing: Wear loose, clean clothing over the tattooed area to prevent rubbing and irritation.
Long-term and what to avoid
Avoid soaking: Stay out of baths, hot tubs, and pools for at least two weeks or until the tattoo is fully healed. Showers are fine, but keep them short.
Stay out of the sun: Protect your tattoo from direct sunlight while it is healing. Once healed, use a strong sunscreen (SPF 25 or higher) to prevent fading over time.
Avoid heavy sweating: Avoid intense exercise, as heavy sweating can cause issues for a healing tattoo.
Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to support the healing process.
Avoid contact with soils, and pets (animals) as this can increase risk of infection.
Listen to your artist: Follow your tattoo artist's specific instructions, as they may vary. If you have concerns, contact your artist directly.
